Striking and unusual Continental European carved hardwood figural sculpture, depicting an embracing young couple confronted by the skeletal figure of Death. The dramatic composition belongs to the centuries-old European Memento Mori / Death and the Maiden / Danse Macabre tradition, in which Death serves as a reminder of the transience of youth, beauty, love and earthly life. The sculpture is impressively carved in the round, with extensive detail and undercutting. Death is rendered as an emaciated skeletal figure with exposed ribs and elongated limbs, dramatically intertwined with the two embracing figures. Particularly appealing details include the expressive faces, individually carved fingers and toes, folds of clothing, hair and skeletal anatomy. The warm-toned hardwood displays an attractive aged surface and patina. The sculpture is unsigned as far as we can determine. Origin: Continental European, possibly German/Austrian. Similar carvings are traditionally found across several regions. Himalayan / Nepalese Folk Art. Shamanic ancestor figures or household guardians. Post figures or protectors often share this dark, heavily weathered wood texture and minimalist face shape. Hand-carved wooden ritual dolls or. Deity figures from various tribal communities across India display similar primitive proportions. Southeast Asian / Dayak Art. Certain protective or ancestral figures. Fragments from Borneo use similar dense, weathered woods with simplified human forms. The facial details are gouged directly into the wood with basic hand tools rather than refined chisels. The circular, hollowed-out eyes, simplified triangular nose, and rectangular slit mouth are prototypical elements of animistic or tribal carvings. Patina & Tool Marks. The head has a much darker, near-black surface layer compared to the lower neck. This contrast indicates the head may have been coated with a protective soot, oil, or sacrificial pigment, a common practice for protective statues in traditional homes or shrines. Horizontal carving grooves remain clearly visible on the forehead and cheeks. A prominent stress fracture runs from the crown of the head down through the left brow and eye, mirroring the larger split in the torso. This tells us the figure was carved from a single, solid log and has dried out naturally over decades of environmental exposure. Architectural Breakdown of the Top. The top of the head is intentionally carved into a series of raised, parallel ridges separated by wide, deep grooves. This stylized form typically represents stylized hair or a traditional tiered cap/headdress, a common convention in ethnographic folk carvings across West Africa, the Himalayas, and Oceanic cultures. You can clearly see flat, angular tool facets inside the grooves. This confirms the use of a traditional straight chisel or standard hand knife to scrape out the channels, rather than a modern curved gouge or rotating mechanical tool. The long vertical split visible in your previous images runs directly across these ridges, starting from the center of the crown. The way the wood grain splits cleanly across the cuts proves that the grooves were carved when the wood was still relatively green, and the stress crack naturally expanded over time as the log seasoned and contracted. Practical Insights from the Measurements. Standard Ritual Doll Proportions. Determining the exact age of a primitive wooden carving without lab testing is always challenging, but we can look at the physical indicators to make an educated estimate. This figure is likely an early-to-mid 20th-century artifact circa. It displays realistic, long-term degradation rather than artificial distressing, but it is not ancient. Key Factors for Dating the Figure. Drying and Stress Fractures. Wood shrinks as it loses moisture. The deep vertical split cutting completely through the head and torso takes decades to develop under normal indoor or sheltered conditions. The crispness of the split suggests it dried naturally over a long span of time. Rot on the Back vs. The dramatic wood rot, splintering, and loss on the reverse side of the torso indicate it spent a long period resting face-up on a damp floor or earthen surface. This kind of localized environmental decay takes several decades to form naturally. The dark coating on the head is not a modern chemical stain. Over time, parts of this coating have naturally chipped away to reveal a lighter, completely seasoned wood core beneath. The uneven ridges on top of the head and the gouged-out eyes show it was made entirely with traditional manual iron tools (knives or hand adzes) rather than precision electric tools, anchoring it to a traditional, rural folk environment. Among the three choices provided, this figure is most consistent with African culture, specifically West or East African traditional folk art. This offering is for a late 19th century hand seated figure of a young dog, likely made in the Black Forest region of Germany. The figure is made of a light colored wood, possibly pine or Linden wood, with an outstanding deep brown natural surface patina. The overall height is app. 12.5 and the base measures app. 7 across at the widest point. The carving is quite realistic with an excellent rendering of the pups fur. He presents with an intense playful feeling that just makes you smile. The surface is excellent with very very minor high point wear and a beautiful mellow surface patina that has never been touched.
