Vtg Guerrero Mexico Cacheton Winged Angel Carved Wood Folk Art Cherub Wall. Vintage hand-carved and hand-painted winged cachetón angel from Guerrero, Mexico. Wonderful Mexican folk art wall sculpture featuring the characteristic exaggerated chubby-cheeked angel face, carved dimensional features, dark hair and dramatically spread wings decorated with colorful hand-painted feather/scallop motifs. These distinctive winged angel figures are commonly known as cachetones (“chubby-cheeked”) and are associated with the folk-art traditions of Guerrero, Mexico. Similar examples are also described as angelitos or winged cherub masks/sculptures. The handmade character is fantastic-expressive glassy-looking eyes, wonderfully strange proportions, visible carving and an aged painted surface that gives him exactly the presence you want from Mexican folk art. Designed for wall display; hanging hardware/opening is present on the reverse as shown. Condition: Good overall vintage condition with age-related surface wear and minor cracking that does not extend completely through the piece. This piece of sporting folk art perfectly captures the striking patterns of the classic native Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). The Carving: The trout is intricately hand-carved from solid wood and detailed with realistic dimensional fins and gills. The trout measures approximately 7 inches long from head to tail. The Paintwork: Beautifully hand-painted with a vivid green back, characteristic pale spots, and textured details highlighting the lateral lines. The Display Base: The fish is mounted to an exceptional, highly figured natural live-edge burl wood slab plaque. The burl wood displays rich, swirling grain pockets and dramatic organic edges. It IS NOT mounted flush to the burl wood backing. The Pedestal: The entire slab is mounted vertically onto a finished walnut/mahogany finished presentation stand complete with a vintage-style black engraved brass identification plate reading “BROOK TROUT”.
