S J Addis Vintage Carving Chisels Set Of 13. A really nice selection of both large and smaller chisels with deep and shallow gouges, V gouge spoon gouges, bent gouges etc. There is one particularly nice square swept gouge which is a quite rare one. These really are fine example of S J Addis chisels! I believe these have been restored by my grandfather and have had brass ferrules added to strengthen the octagonal handles which can be prone to splitting and cracking. This set however have no cracked handles and all are stable and can be used as working chisels for many, many more years to come. Some have previously had name stamps on them but all are stamps as opposed to scratched into handle so all are in keeping with the premium feel and history they have. Not sure if they are all original handles but all in the same style with some mixed timbers including mahogany and rosewood. They have been wrapped up carefully for the last 30 years with the tang, wax dipped (now removed). Anyone who is looking for an aged patina these may not be the chisels for you! It stuck with me and to this day I keep my own chisels (some of my grandfathers) honed to perfection. These chisels have been passed down through my family from my grandfather and great grandfather who was a master craftsman in his day, he would have used chisels such as these on his most treasured job in the great hall of the Titanic. There are more of his chisels listed separately as well as some of my grandfathers chisels who followed in his fathers footsteps (albeit not quite as successfully). Unfortunately I have no provenance for them and although it has been much discussed with pride amongst my family and their friends this information is for all intents and purposes just anecdotal as far as evidence goes. Ideally I would prefer that these chisels go on to be used as my grandfather was fond of telling me they had produced some of the most wonderful work my great grandfather ever carved! They are sharpened honed and polished but a couple may still need some work if they are to go on to be working tools again. Set Of 15 J B Addis 9 & 10 Prize Medal Vintage Woodcarving Chisels. A good mix of both deep and shallow gouges, spoon gouges and straight types. The 9 & 10 Prize medals are from my great grandfathers collection. These are the original handles and still in very good condition. There are ten, 10 Prize medals two of which have the years 51 to 89 stamp (dating them to end of 1800s). There is one S J Addis W&P included in the set. My great grandfather sometimes included the odd mixed chisel to make up a set. Most of these chisels dont have sweep numbers which identifies them as early types before the death of J B Addis in 1889 all but 3 J B Addis have no sweep numbers so are dated as above.
