Vintage hand carved wooden bust sculpture depicting a male figure wearing a traditional headwrap or turban-style headdress. This decorative sculpture has a strong Southeast Asian / Balinese inspired appearance with detailed carving and aged dark finish. The facial features and wrapped headpiece give it a very striking display presence. The sculpture appears to be hand carved from solid wood and weighs approximately 6 lbs. Condition: Visible age, wear, finish loss, surface scratches, cracks/splitting in the wood, scuffs, and imperfections throughout consistent with age and handmade construction. There are multiple age cracks visible around the base and body. Please inspect all photos carefully. No maker label found. Handwritten marking on underside appears to read “Bali”. Approximate height visible in photos appears around 11-12 inches.

This is a very unique sculpture, looking like some combination of Witco style and Cubism. It is signed Cortez near the bottom of the front, but I don’t have any more info on them. It is overall 29 tall, consisting of a wood carving sitting on a twisted brass pipe that is mounted to a piece of granite. It weighs 12 lbs. 7.5 oz, with most of the weight due to the base, which is 6.5″ x 6.5″ x 2 3/8. By itself, the wood is a bit under 24″ x 3″ x 3. The wood has light wear with scratches and small chips. The base has a polished top, but the four sides are not polished, and one has a stain. It has some small and tiny chips. The wood is currently at a slight angle. It could probably be straightened by bending the twisted brass pipe. The wood is not fixed to the pipe; it just sits using gravity. It moves back and forth when tapped, so it also qualifies as a piece of kinetic art. The sculpture has a hole through it, which looks like it was part of the wood before it was carved. One of the bends of the brass pipe has a couple of cracks. One of the rubber feet is missing from the bottom.
