Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles. Vintage 1920s Era Wood Art Sculpture Death Maiden Doctor Pomegranate Childbirth. DESCRIPTION Original vintage wooden walnut sculpture of a naked lady flanked on either side by a doctor and death dating to the 1920’s era. This imagery may be alluding to the typical death and the maiden sculptures of the medieval period. The naked lady holds a pomegranate aloft in her left hand which alludes to her fertility and the likelihood that she will become a mother. The doctor on her dexter side (right) gently holds on to her arm with both hands looks straight ahead and has a monoaural in his medical garment pocket. The figure of death is contorted around her sinister side (left) and he looks up at her whilst trying to pull her down to him. The message is clear that women were in mortal danger just by choosing motherhood and that it is a 50/50 chance of it going wrong. Medical developments have come a long way since this carving was made in the 1920’s/30’s but it is a great reminder that is still a difficult journey not without peril. This would make a great addition to any library, kitchen or European style property. MEASUREMENTS Wooden sculpture measure 16″ tall by 6.5″ deep by 12 wide and weighs 4lb 9oz. CONDITION In good condition overall with some patina commensurate with age (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description). Fabulous antique Spanish hand carved solid wood figural panel or plaque, likely a detailed rendition or version of “The Death of Socrates”! One of two marvelous hand carved figural panels that we’re adding this week, this one quite amazing in its detail and state of preservation! The paper label on the back missing some patches but reads “Exposition Nacional de Bellas Artes (Barcelona)” and has the carver’s? Name hand written below, possibly “Maneul Tabella”. The National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spanish: Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes) was a regular event that took place in Spain from 1856 to 1968; usually in Madrid. These exhibitions were in the form of a competition, established by a Royal Decree from Queen Isabella II in 1853. It was the largest official exhibition of Spanish art. This one signed in the lower right corner and appears to read M. Very good to excellent condition. I really see no flaws to note here, just a stunning piece! Possibly a tiny nip or two to the carving but, as stated, nothing stands out. I’ve included several enlarged and detailed photos so look and enjoy. The plaque is 8.5″ x 5 1/8″ and roughly 1/2 thick.
