Vintage Jointed Wooden Doll Figure by Chicago Artist Don Ellefson. Piece is the size of a small child, constructed from wood with bolts to attach the movable arms and legs. Makes for a great display piece to show off hats and necklaces, or charming Rustic Cabin Décor. Excellent vintage condition, with subtle signs of age and wear, all adding to the rich naturally aged patina. There is a natural split on the grain in the wood on the back of the right arm (see photo 6). Does not compromise function of appearance. The figure does not stand on its own but does not look like it was mounted on a stand. Up for sale is a neat carved wood figure. I guess it was a doll or toy. I believe it dates to around 1835 or so. It does have a base with square nails. The base might be slightly later but no later than 1880. The figure has 2 nails as eyes and a carved mouth. Lots of wear to the paint. It does have some sort or nail or iron piece through its head but not sure why as the piece is all carved out of a single piece of wood. Head is not attached with the nail as far as i can tell. Neat piece of folk art. Found in Maine or NH. 4 and half inches tall. See can for scale. Condition: Nice displayable condition. Loads of wear to the paint but really its a great dry surface. Just the best patina. The best was a possible addition but I would assume it was done by 1880 if not earlier. Base shows good age and oxidation as well. See photos and video.

A kachina (also Hopi : katsina , plural katsinim) is a spirit being in western Pueblo cosmology and religious practices. The western Pueblo, Native American cultures located in the southwestern United States , include Hopi , Zuni , Tewa Village (on the Hopi Reservation), Acoma Pueblo , and Laguna Pueblo. The kachina cult has spread to more eastern Pueblos, e. From Laguna to Isleta. The term also refers to the kachina dancers, masked members of the tribe who dress up as kachinas for religious ceremonies. Kachina dolls are wooden figures representing kachinas which are given as gifts to children. A kachina can represent anything in the natural world or cosmos, from a revered ancestor to an element, a location, a quality, a natural phenomenon, or a concept. There are more than 400 different kachinas in Hopi and Pueblo culture. This offering is for a vintage ca 1940’s to 50’s hand made folk art wooden doll figure. The young lady stands app. 17 tall and has metal post on the bottoms of her feet to put her on a stand, there is no stand. There are no makers markings. The head and torso were carved from one piece of wood, the wooden arms are jointed at the shoulders with wire and the wooden legs are attached with wire as well. She wears what appears to be her original clothing and hat, she has a purse over her arm. The workmanship is excellent and the condition is wonderful. There is minor soiling to her clothing and wear to her hat. The tip of one foot is missing. Otherwise there are no breaks or cracks and she displays beautifully.
