This powerful near life-size image of the young Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Is hand carved from a single chunk of wood and measures an impressive 22″ tall x 19″ wide x 10 deep and adeptly captures the charisma and character of the 20th century Civil Rights Icon. The work of contemporary folk carver Paul Weir, the piece was hewn, shaped and carved using traditional 19th century hand tools and painted with house paint to imitate the artisans who created ships’ figure heads and similar early Americana. Weir is a self-taught carver who worked for many years in the Philippines helping native inhabitants develop sustainable crafts markets using native woods. This image has some minor chips in the paint and old, stable shrinkage cracks and evidence of a repaired drying crack under the paint. The work has been in the same private collection for the last 20+ years and the wood and paint have remained stable.
