A beautifully hand-carved Mami Wata (Mammy Water) figure in dark hardwood, depicting the iconic West African water spirit in her classic form: a naturalistic female upper body transitioning into a scaled fish tail below, with a large serpent coiling dramatically around the lower body and base. About Mami Wata: One of the most powerful and widely revered spirit figures across West and Central Africa, Mami Wata is a water deity associated with wealth, beauty, healing, and fortune. Her iconography uniquely blends African water spirit traditions with influences from Indian snake-charmer imagery and European mermaid lore – making her one of the great syncretic spiritual figures in world religious art. Carvings of this type are collected both as African folk art and as sacred objects within active Mami Wata spiritual communities across West Africa, the Caribbean, and the African diaspora. Finely detailed fish-scale work on the lower body – tight, deeply incised, highly uniform. Full serpent with scaled body, coiled base, and rendered head with eye detail. A really gorgeous and unusual theme: mermaid maternity. A mermaid mom and her baby commune. A lovely wood carving somewhat in the folk art style. It measures 14 inches in length and approximately 8 inches in height. The provenance is a mystery to me. There are slight signs of wear (see photos as they are part of the description) but they are mercifully mostly out of sight and the sculpture displays beautifully from front and back. I have never seen this theme treated in art before and it’s a real stunner. Lovely play of fantasy and sensuous use of line. I couldn’t find a signature in the carving itself but there is some writing on the bottom that I found impossible to decipher. This item is in the category “Art\Art Sculptures”. Vtg Carved Wood and Ebonized Mermaid w/ Gold Gilt Finish Mounted on Metal Frame. Here is a nice Vintage Carved Figure of a Mermaid Figurehead Piece for your collection or decor needs. The piece would make a great gift or keep for yourself! This Vintage Mermaid Figure came from the extensive collection from a NJ estate. We have a number of that collector’s marine/nautical items that will be listed soon for sale separately in our store wood and resin figureheads, double glass electric lanterns, brass spotlights, Dumas Chris Craft remote control model w/ engine (similar to a 1241), a newer Celestron telescope, custom compass rose table and wall plaque and other lanterns. The listing numbers will be noted below once they are published. Beautiful wood and maybe ebonized carved figure here. Mounted on a sturdy metal frame to allow it to be safely mounted on a wall. The mermaid figure is pieced together in places, like at the arms and at the tail. Was made that way. Very interesting piece here. Have not found a maker’s mark on it yet, nor do we know the country of origination. This is a hand carved piece cast piece. Beautiful gold gilt paint was applied to the whole mermaid. The wood piece in front of the mermaid is painted a glossy black. The metal frame had been given the look of being hand wrought and is painted with a black enamel paint. No provenance or paperwork came with this piece. Nice detailing on the face and features of the subject here. Eyes really catch yours. Mermaids are to be entrancing creatures and this one does not disappoint. No visible breaks, repairs, or missing pieces on the sculpture itself. Some minor wear to the finish and paint as would be expected with an item of this age and material. Some shrinkage cracks to the wood as can be seen in the pics. In very good shape compared to other pieces we have come across over the years. We will also offer to deliver the Sculpture within 300 miles of Georgetown, DE one way. Same additional charges would apply to a pick-up. The Mermaid Sculpture is 42.5″ tall, by 19.5″ across, by 31 wide at the base. The mermaid from top of head to the bottom of the tail is 31/5 tall. This carved wood figure is very large and very heavy, would guess that it weight about 65-70 pounds. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. For your consideration is an amazing all handmade folk art mermaid sculpture. Beautifully Hand carved and meticulously hand painted. Some minor condition issues. Measures 39″ long and 15″ tall at highest point. Story goes it was used in a small traveling sideshow here in MA and down to CT. The show apparently didn’t last long and was soon disbanded in the 1960’s after having started less than 10years prior. Been hung on a wall in a family members home ever since.
