Set Of 15 J B Addis 9 & 10 Prize Medal Vintage Woodcarving Chisels. A good mix of both deep and shallow gouges, spoon gouges and straight types. The 9 & 10 Prize medals are from my great grandfathers collection. These are the original handles and still in very good condition. There are ten, 10 Prize medals two of which have the years 51 to 89 stamp (dating them to end of 1800s). There is one S J Addis W&P included in the set. My great grandfather sometimes included the odd mixed chisel to make up a set. Most of these chisels dont have sweep numbers which identifies them as early types before the death of J B Addis in 1889 all but 3 J B Addis have no sweep numbers so are dated as above. They have for many years been wrapped up carefully with the tang, wax dipped (now removed). You wont find many of these chisels around which are still in this condition, they truly are great examples of J B Addis 10 prize medals, which were a shining example of British toolmaking with some of the best steel ever produced! Anyone who is looking for an aged patina these may not be the chisels for you! It stuck with me and to this day I keep my own chisels (some of my grandfathers) honed to perfection. These chisels have been passed down through my family from my grandfather and great grandfather who was a master craftsman in his day, he would have used chisels such as these on his most treasured job in the great hall of the Titanic. There are more of his chisels listed separately as well as some of my grandfathers chisels who followed in his fathers footsteps (albeit not quite as successfully). Unfortunately I have no provenance for them and although it has been much discussed with pride amongst my family and their friends this information is for all intents and purposes just anecdotal as far as evidence goes. Ideally I would prefer that these chisels go on to be used as my grandfather was fond of telling me they had produced some of the most wonderful work my great grandfather ever carved! They are sharpened but a couple may still need some work if they are to go on to be working tools again. Set Of 16 J B Addis 10 Prize Medal Vintage Woodcarving Chisels. Photos taken indoors at night because its been raining all day! Will update with photos taken in natural light soon. The 10 Prize medals are from my great grandfathers collection. I believe my Grandfather has restored the handles on these chisels as I believe they are the original handles and I doubt they would be looking so good after nearly 150 years! It looks like he has used some French polish as he did to a number of my great grandfathers sets of chisels so it will be a resilient finish as he would have done these at least 30 years ago. Given by Ludwig Wagner, Won by Martin Jaud. Dated February 20, 1954. Back shows the handwritten provenance names painted on front. MEASURES: 12 1/2″ diameter and 7/8″ thick. For your consideration is a Herring Bros Vintage Large Set of 12 Wood Carving Chisels Gouges London Prize Medal. Each is marked Herring Bros London Prize Medal. Each cutting edge has been sharpened and is ready to use. Some of the set is fairly rare to find like the 7/8 number 11 Gouge, there are fish tails, forward bent, V carver, and overall larger than normal sizes for a set. These carving tools were from my late father’s estate where these were used on large carvings like front doors and murals. Some handles have been replaced and are all tight to the steel on each carver. No damage to any handles but some show more wear than others. Herring Brothers is known for their fine carving tools like these that are at least 100 years old and still work perfectly. If you have any questions please ask.
