This vintage “Santo de Palo” of San Sebastian is in good condition. The wood is solid and well painted, with a detailed face, drops of blood, ribbed chest and smooth skin. The right arm has a small crack at the shoulder (See photo). There’s a slight crack on the left wrist (See photo) which is hardly visible. The two arrows that pierce the chest were broken off and must be re-glued. It’s believed to have been carved sometime in the 1970’s or’80’s.

The medium-sized statue stands at 8 inches in length, 6 inches in height, and 2.5 inches in width, and is made of high-quality wood. The statue is handcrafted using traditional carving techniques and features intricate details that make it a true work of art. It is signed by the artist himself and is an original piece circa 1980’s/1990’s. This sculpture is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of Puerto Rican culture and folk art. This Puerto Rican Santo de Palo of San Antonio de Padua is in mint condition. It has no cracks holes or damage. Paint is even and smooth. San Antonio measures 9 1/4 inches high from the black base to the top of his head. The two lower bases are rustic and unpainted, but retain a slight smell of ceder or mahogony when covered. All are held together by two nails (See photo). It’s not signed by the santero who carved it. It’s believed to have been made sometime in the 1970’s when the collector was visiting local artisans throughout the island. As is customary with images of San Antonio de Padua, he is wearing a brown Franciscan habit, carrying a book in one arm and the infant Jesus on the other. Formerly, he was used by unmarried women who wanted to find husbands or have children. He can be turned upside down or against a corner until a devotee has their wish granted.

This wood carving of Gov. Luis Munoz Marin is in excellent condition. No damage to wood. Paint is strong and even. Desk and base stand are lightly varnished. It’s believed that the carving (talla de madera) was made in 1984. He’s considered the architect of the island’s Commonwealth status. His name is on the bottom (See photo). In 1946, he moved to Brooklyn, N. Neftale also became a Santero (carver of wooden saints) like his father. His works are in collections at the Ponce Art Museum and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP).

Ferre is in very good condition and has never been used. No holes, flaking or warping. Wood and paint are detailed and smooth. Left thumb is slightly damaged, missing tip (See photo). This “talla de madera” was carved in 1983 or 1984 by Puerto Rican artesano Jose Negron; he signed it on the bottom (See photo). He was the island’s third democratically elected governor. After serving as governor, he was elected to the Senate in 1977 and served until 1985. An engineer by training and a businessman, he had two children, newspaper publisher Luis Antonio and author, Rosario. Ferre died in San Juan in 2003. In 1946, he moved to Brooklyn, N. Neftale also became an an artesano/santero (carver of wooden saints) like his father. Negron, the father, is considered a “Santero Espiritual” by the Santos Museum in San Juan and won numerous prizes throughout his life. His works are in collections at the Ponce Art Museum and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP).

Master woodcarver Domingo Orta created this piece sometime in the late 1960’s or early 70’s. It’s a rare find and in very good condition. The wood’s smooth, no warping, cracks or damage. There is one tiny insect hole on the right side of the base (See photo) It is one of Orta’s earliest works as seen by the fact that it’s unpainted and his wife Santia was the one who began painting his carvings. 1,1975 as seen by the name of the store on the base. In the 1980’s, she opened an arts and crafts store (Kiosko Cultural) in Plaza las Americas (See sticker on bottom of base). Orta did not sign this work or identify the saint he carved. He is considered a master carver and had, together with his family, received “El Premio de Excelencia Artesanal” by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. He, his wife Santia and four sons followed his lead and all became “santeros” or carvers of wooden saints and traditional figures (estampas). Santia died in 2013. Orta’s family were farmers. As a boy, he began carving “cuatros, ” a local musicial instrument before carving saints. His works are part of the permanent collections at the Ponce Museum of Art, the Vatican collection in Rome, Museo Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Spain’s Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Compostela and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.

This wood carving of an “Afroantillana” (Black Latina) is in very good condition, no damage to the wood. The woman’s post earrings, tight-knit hair, and beautifully detailed facial features were carved by a Puerto Rican artisan sometime in the 1980’s or early 1990’s. The artist did not sign it.
