Richly varied surfaces and a confident tance with arms akimbo make this novel ca. 1970 wooden assemblage especially poerful and its impressive 35 height make it memorably imposing. Meticulously crafted from numerous rectangular-solid bits of tulip poplar and pine and mounted to a thick slab of raw American black walnut with live edge, the work looks back to DuChamp’s Nude descending a Staircase with some Louise Nevelson serendipity and attenuated form of Giacometti. Created by Robert M. Kuntz studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and had the formative experience of sculpting clay prototype automobile models for Studebaker’s legendary designer, Raymond Lowey. As an owner and chief designer for a company that supplied industrial models and displays, his profession afforded him lots of shop time where he would often turn to his first love, sculpture. Using found wood scraps/drop-off and the metal and woodworking tools and hardware supply ready to hand, he would create sophisticated and playful artworks in his spare time. This work is sturdy and dusty with over-sized, exposed wood screws attaching it to its base and lending a brutalist touch. Kuntz became a locally renowned sculpture in his later years, creating monumental welded steel public works in the South Bend, Indiana area and was also recognized for his design and sculptural additions to local ecclesiastical interiors. The work shows dings and scratches to its lacquered surface that would benefit from a coat of lemon oil or similar.
