Puerto Rico Art vintage Santo de Palo wood carving San Sebastian -Ernesto Rivera

This vintage “Santo de Palo” of San Sebastian is in good condition. The wood is solid and well painted, with a detailed face, drops of blood, ribbed chest and smooth skin. The right arm has a small crack at the shoulder (See photo). There’s a slight crack on the left wrist (See photo) which is hardly visible. The two arrows that pierce the chest were broken off and must be re-glued. It’s believed to have been carved sometime in the 1970’s or’80’s.

Puerto Rico Art vintage Santo de Palo wood carving of San Antonio de Padua

This Puerto Rican Santo de Palo of San Antonio de Padua is in mint condition. It has no cracks holes or damage. Paint is even and smooth. San Antonio measures 9 1/4 inches high from the black base to the top of his head. The two lower bases are rustic and unpainted, but retain a slight smell of ceder or mahogony when covered. All are held together by two nails (See photo). It’s not signed by the santero who carved it. It’s believed to have been made sometime in the 1970’s when the collector was visiting local artisans throughout the island. As is customary with images of San Antonio de Padua, he is wearing a brown Franciscan habit, carrying a book in one arm and the infant Jesus on the other. Formerly, he was used by unmarried women who wanted to find husbands or have children. He can be turned upside down or against a corner until a devotee has their wish granted.

Puerto Rico Art vintage Santo de Palo wood carving by Domingo Orta

Master woodcarver Domingo Orta created this piece sometime in the late 1960’s or early 70’s. It’s a rare find and in very good condition. The wood’s smooth, no warping, cracks or damage. There is one tiny insect hole on the right side of the base (See photo) It is one of Orta’s earliest works as seen by the fact that it’s unpainted and his wife Santia was the one who began painting his carvings. 1,1975 as seen by the name of the store on the base. In the 1980’s, she opened an arts and crafts store (Kiosko Cultural) in Plaza las Americas (See sticker on bottom of base). Orta did not sign this work or identify the saint he carved. He is considered a master carver and had, together with his family, received “El Premio de Excelencia Artesanal” by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. He, his wife Santia and four sons followed his lead and all became “santeros” or carvers of wooden saints and traditional figures (estampas). Santia died in 2013. Orta’s family were farmers. As a boy, he began carving “cuatros, ” a local musicial instrument before carving saints. His works are part of the permanent collections at the Ponce Museum of Art, the Vatican collection in Rome, Museo Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Spain’s Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Compostela and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.

Puerto Rico Art vintage Santo de Palo Virgen de Monserrate Antonio Aviles

It’s in very good condition and has rustic charm. A small piece of wood is missing on the left wrist (See photo) and her hand has to be firmly reattached with glue. There is a tiny black hole in front of skirt below navel, and the back of cape near her neck (See photos). The Virgin seems carved from one piece of solid wood. The black markings on her face and skirt were painted by Aviles. He also used red paint to fill in the lineal grooves he carved on her skirt. He did not carve Baby Jesus for this Santo. Since it was an early work, Aviles’ recollection is that it’s made of cedar and could be “La Virgin de la Monserrate” although Baby Jesus is not included. Will send additional photos upon request. LARGE VINTAGE SAN PASQUAL SANTO FROM SANTA FE. This Santo from Santa Fe, NM is the patron saint of the kitchen, called San Pasqual. Note that he has a basket containing three types of breads. He is 15″ tall by 3 1/2″ wide at the widest point. He has the traditional monk’s haircut, the short beard and the pious, prayerful look. The wood is totally dry and hard as a rock. I would estimate this to be over 50 years old, due to its condition. It could seriously be 100 years old. More research might provide you the artist’s name and age. This is a Very Old 24″ Tall Hand Carved “Santo Nino Vintage santos, Christ Child Statue. This is a truly unique piece. I’m not sure of the age of the piece but it appears to be quite old and nicely detailed. It is hand carved Wood with articulated Arms. There appears to be some old repair but the piece is very solid. It includes a heavy metal base that is not attached permanently but it is pegged through a hole that runs up one of the legs. This piece deserves a good home where it will be cherished and loved.
