The tradition of carving ironwood (Olneya tesota, or palo fierro) began with the Seri people, particularly in the mid-20th century when they began carving sculptures. The carvings are made from the dense wood of the ironwood tree, native to the Sonoran Desert. Significance: Ironwood carving has become an important economic activity and a significant aspect of the Seri culture. Characteristics: Seri ironwood carvings often depict animals found in their environment, such as marine life and desert animals.
