Artist: Sven Gunnarsson (Sweden Workshop). Character: “Kolingen” (Famous satirical bohemian character created by artist Albert Engström). Style: High-tier Scandinavian Flat-Plane / Caricature Whittling. Material: Hand-Carved Solid Wood. Era: Mid-to-Late 20th Century. Country of Origin: Sweden. Up for sale is an exceptional and highly collectible piece of traditional Swedish folk art. This masterfully executed flat-plane wood carving is by the renowned Swedish master carver Sven Gunnarsson, depicting “Kolingen” -the legendary, witty hobo character created by famous Swedish cartoonist Albert Engström. The character design features magnificent, sharp geometric facet cuts that give life to the clothing folds and expressive facial structure. The figurine is brilliantly hand-painted with signature details, including clean white pinstriped trousers, a long formal coat tail, and Kolingen’s classic crumpled top hat. The underside features the textbook signature finish of a genuine Sven Gunnarsson premium collectible: raw, flat-sanded unpainted wood framed neatly by a thick, dark hand-painted perimeter border. While unsigned by hand, the precise execution, face design, and exact shoe-base craftsmanship guarantee its workshop authenticity. Excellent Vintage Condition: The original paint remains incredibly crisp and vibrant with excellent color saturation. Details: The white pinstriping on the trousers is perfectly intact and sharp. Structure: No chips, hairline cracks, structural splits, or past restorations. The wood edges along the facets remain beautifully clean and sharp. The raw wood soles show beautiful, natural age coloration. Please see all high-definition photos for precise details on dimensions and condition.
