A fantastic wood carving of the 1499 Swiss Battle of Hallau. The Swiss castle was attacked and the attack was thwarted. Measures just under 24 x 18. Carved for a friend. The outer wood frame strips are a little loose. Expect minor evidence of use or imperfections, dings etc. We take many photos of our items to assist with the description. Please Note: The first 5 pics showing darker patina are more true to actual in-hand appearance. Some pics are a bit lighter tone to better show the intricate carving details. Antique original all hand-carved Black Forest wood doggy figure of an expertly rendered poodle. All original perfect condition with beautiful deep rich surface patina & black glass eyes, no breaks or cracks. This is the BEST non-bear carved “dog” example on the internet, or anywhere else, for any antique Black Forest carving! This poodle is so expertly carved & full of life that every which way you turn it & look at it, he/she just seems to be alive & moving. (the pics do not do him/her justice) The body & head are carved at a curved contour with the four legs separated & paws positioned for maximum life-like positioning. When you do find a Black Forest dog, it is usually a hunting dog. This is the first poodle we have ever seen! Guessing to date ca. 1860’s- 1880’s would be our guess based on years of collecting these figures. There was a “Poodle craze” for a time in the latter Victorian era. Such carvings were done in a similar manner into the 1920’s, but we believe this to be an earlier example based on the Estate that it came from & the style of the carving. Perfect for the Black Forest or Poodle lovers. Very scarce to find – perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime treasure! The only one we have ever seen in many years of collecting.
