This marvelous early 19th century Siam /Thailand Teppanom Guardian Angel. Sculpture is a historic find! Completely original, it’s one of a handful of surviving. Early 19th century Siam polychromed wood sculptures. Teppanom (Thepphanom) deities appeared when the Buddha reached enlightenment. They were the guardians of Temples, important religious objects and scrolls. As Buddhism spread, more Teppanom descended to protect villages and homes. This rare Teppanom Goddess is in a standing pose and was clearly sculpted to be hung flat. Against a flat surface such as a wall. It is a household Guardian Goddess. Some works of art develop a certain’presence’. We have handled very many and. Can discernthis “x-factor” in a piece. Whether it was the love of it’s owners or the. Love it’s creator possessed, these works have a sort of’soul’ you can feel when near the art. This 19th Century sculpture has that feel. It’s potent enough to make one believe the piece. Really does represent a deva. The faded paint, wear and a long ago repaired arm. Take nothing away from this feeling – in fact, they may add to it.
