Vintage Unique Sculpture Carved Wood Bolivia Signed G. Arias – Aymara Indian Art! This elegant, rich sculpture wooden carved shows us the head of Inca woman. It is made by Bolivian artist G Arias, c. 1960’s is carved out of wood. The sculpture has an incised signature “Arias” on the side…. The dimensions – height approximately 46cm. (18 Inches) tall including the base and a pedestal of the same wood approximately 18x20cm. Very fine intricate details carved into the wood… Striking examples of carving. The choices of wood in that area include Mahogany, Spanish Cedar and South American oak. It is only a guess by the medium weight of the wood for the size of the sculpture and softness affording reasonable sculpting technique my bet is on the spanish cedar. Spanish Cedar is not a true Cedar. It is actually closer to a Mahogany. Its color can range from light brown to a pinkish/red brown. Spanish Cedar has a moderate rot resistance in old growth trees. Inside the holes on the bottom The wood appears to be the same color as the sculpture which is a pinkish red brown. This is the same wood that many of the fine cigar boxes and humidors are made from. The wood has a great deal of chatoyancy. The photos were taken in natural diffused light outside and the actual sculpture are darker, richer and warmer in color. Arias can be documented through a professor by the name of Harold Lincoln Thomas, from the University of Iowa, who bequeathed his extensive travel collection to the university upon his death in 1974. Professor Thomas made his trip to Bolivia in 1950. His entire travel collection is part of a special collection that is open for research at the University of Iowa Libraries Special collections.
