Vintage African Makonde-style Ujamaa “Family Tree” or “Tree of Life” sculpture, intricately hand carved from a single piece of dense dark hardwood. This striking figural carving features a large central ancestral figure surrounded by numerous interconnected smaller figures extending around the entire sculpture. The complex composition, elongated figures, deeply textured hair and clothing, and interconnected family theme are characteristic of the Ujamaa style associated with Makonde woodcarvers of Tanzania and Mozambique. “Ujamaa, ” meaning family or community, became an important theme in modern Makonde carving, with groups of interconnected figures symbolizing family, ancestry, community and continuity between generations. The sculpture is especially impressive when viewed from different angles, revealing additional figures and details throughout the carving. Details. Hand carved African figural sculpture.
