This beautiful, unique piece of sculptural art is a rare find. It is a finely executed and interestingly designed object of art from Gene Sherer of the American Studio Craft Movement. This piece is features a fish sculptured from striped, layered cherry wood with inlayed wood eyes. The fish opens up with a hidden hinge to reveal a secret storage space. There are three suede lined drawers on one side and two circular holes on the other side. The fish is 16 ½ long, 13 ¼ high, and 4 ½ wide and weighs 9.2 pounds. It swivels on an irregular shaped base which is 13 ¾ long, 7 ½ wide at the widest point and is ¾ thick. It has the original satin finish with no chips, cracks or repairs. The hidden hinge and magnetic catch both work as new. The three drawers slide smoothly. The bottom is signed, dated and numbered GENE SHERER. A fantastic and beautifully crafted jewelry box carved by the Master Carver Po Shun Leong. Amazing lines and ten masterfully fitted rotating cups. Signed Po Shun on bottom with names of wood: Satinwood, Wenge, Mahogany and Osage. Dimensions of this item are: 9-1/2″ Tall, 9″ Wide, 5 Deep and Weighs – 8lbs 8oz. Everything fits and moves perfectly. Source is Wikipedia: Po Shun Leong was born in Northampton, England, on March 15, 1941 and is an artist, [1] former architect, sculptor and furniture maker. [2] He was educated in the United Kingdom, first at the Quaker Leighton Park School in Berkshire, and then at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, in London, and has resided in Southern California since 1981. He is also known since the late 1980s for his highly intricate and inspiring one-of-a-kind wood boxes that have been enthusiastically acquired and are in museum collections. The “Landscape” box, a constantly evolving series since 1983 – more drama than box – is architectural in character and built up of many different woods in their natural colors. They are inspired from ancient or legendary civilizations. The flamboyant sense of shape, surprise and presentation combined with his initial struggles in Mexico has created a following for his art worldwide.
