Vintage 1883 Wood Hand Carved Wall Hanging Signed O. The wall hanging is 14 1/2″ tall, 9″ wide and 2 thick. This wall hanging is signed on the back: Presented by O. Sample of wood carving taken from “Andrew’s Mansion” Cleveland Ohio. According to Abandoned, Old & Interesting Places in Ohio Website. This Mansion, the largest and most pretentious home Cleveland ever saw, was built by John D. Rockefeller’s early partner, Samuel Andrews, in the fledgling Standard Oil Company. It had only six mammoth rooms on the first floor with a circular staircase winding up from two sides of a uniquely sky-lighted center court. Each of Samuel Andrew’s seven children had their own room, and the home was apparently the first in Cleveland to have an elevator, which ran from the basement to the third floor. The home took three years to build, was lived in for three years, and then left vacant but fully furnished for 30 years. Apparently the logistics, layout, and maintenance costs of the home were not properly planned for and became quite a burden on both the family and staff of the home. Andrew’s dream of entertaining Queen Victoria never came to be. The home quickly became known as Andrews Folly. Built to last generations, the home finally came down stone by stone in 1923 after standing for only 41 years. This would be a nice gift or an awesome addition to your collection.
