Vintage African LUBA Carved Wood Male Fertility Tribal Zaire Sculpture. Antique Vintage African LUBA Tribal Carved Wood Standing Male Fertility Statue Figure. This powerful carved standing man is a Luba male fertility or ancestor figure. He is carved from one piece of wood and is mounted on an iron stand. He was thought to be carved in the. Mid 20th century, but could be older. It is unusual to have a male standing figure as Luba sculptures are predominately female. The Luba people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo have a long and tumultuous history beginning in 1500 with the establishment of the Kingdom of Luba. This figure exudes strength from his large head with its distinctive top knot & braided hairdo down to his flat, almost wedge shaped feet. There are strong facial features and proportions, but also incised surface decorations to indicate facial & body scarification. Dimensions are 27-5/8″ height x 7″ width x 7″ depth with an 8″ square iron base and the weight with the base is 13 pounds 11 ounces. The stand is removable as he is secured by two studs that fit into two holes on the bottom of his feet. The condition is very good, with a lovely patina to the wood as can be seen in the photos. There is a shallow crack on one side of his tummy and two small holes in the top of his head. Please note that I use clean recycled packing materials whenever possible (peanuts, bubble wrap, boxes etc). Auctiva Free Image Hosting. Show off your items with Auctiva’s Listing Templates.
