Vintage Charles Elkan Natural Edge Burl Wooden Box Sculpture Maple Wood. This handsome box was hand made of maple burl by Charles Elkan of Silverton, Oregon in the 1980’s. Oregon maple burl yields a remarkably varied grain. In the case of the burl Elkan used for this box sculpture, it is wavy and satiny on the top, sides, back and bottom. The front of the box has the natural surface of the tree burl, in the style pioneered by George Nakashima. The box measures about 8 inches long, 4 3/4 inches in height and 4 1/2 inches in width. The lid comes off to reveal a hollowed out interior about 3 inches deep and measuring about 6 1/4 inches by 2 inches. A matching protruding carved piece on the underside of the lid anchors it in place. The box weighs about 2 lbs. 4 ounces and is in great condition. Signed “Charles Elkan, ” inscribed into the wood on the bottom. Charles is the brother and business partner of the late Michael Elkan of the eponymous Michael Elkan Studio.
