MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY IN D I A N ANTIQUE HIGH-RELIEF WOOD CARVING of the HINDU TRIO of GODDESSES LAKSHMI, KALI & MATSYA. On RAISED, ORNATE DECORATIVE WOODEN PEDESTAL BASE in DARK STAINED, MATTE. FINISH with ORIGINAL DRY SURFACES. Mid-late 19th century In d i a n Hindu antique spiritual intricate wood carvings of Goddesses. 12″ Height x 7″ Width x 1 ¾ Depth. This simply incredible, very intricate, hand carved high relief, bas-relief figurative wood sculpture of the trio of In d i a n Goddesses Lakshmi, Kali and Matsya. The standing female goddess figure with four arms is Lakshmi. The figure under Lakshmi lying down on the floor is Kali and the figure on the right below and to the left of Lakshmi is Matsya. Matsya is a half-fish/half human figure and is seen as a guardian of the seas and the natural bounty it holds. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, luxury, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. She holds the promise of material fulfillment and contentment. Kali is the Hindu goddess (or Devi) of death, time, and doomsday and is often associated with sexuality and violence but is also considered a strong mother-figure and symbolic of motherly-love. All three goddess figures are realized from a single block of wood. There’s only a very small wood chip on the lower front edge of the block base. The bas-relief, incised sgraffito surfaces compliment the high-relief, overall hand carved wood figurative sculpture. Amazing and incredibly beautiful. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
