This is a heavy wooden carving by celebrated American artist Don Turano. The sculpture stands 10 inches tall, 9 1/2 inches long, and 4 inches wide. It is signed D. Turano and dated 1955 on the side of the base. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1930, Turano spent the majority of his career in Washington, D. He died in 2002. Turano’s work appeared in exhibition venues that include the Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, and the World Trade Center. His life-size bust of Ronald Reagan is displayed at the president’s library in California. At the time of his death, The Washington Post published a long obituary about his life and career that is still available on-line. It is quite heavy and has a felt bottom on the base.
