








Ferre is in excellent condition. Face, chair, book and hands are well detailed (See photo). Colors are strong and wood smooth. Desk and base are lightly varnished. They signed their names on the bottom (See photo). He was the island’s third democratically elected governor. After serving as governor, he was elected to the Senate in 1977 and served until 1985. An engineer by training and a businessman, he had two children, newspaper publisher Luis Antonio and author Rosario. Ferre died in San Juan in 2003. In 1946, he moved to Brooklyn, N. Neftale was also a Santero (carver of wooden saints) like his father. Negron, the father, is considered a “Santero Espiritual” by the Santos Museum in San Juan and won numerous prizes throughout his life. His works are in collections at the Ponce Art Museum and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP). Little is known of Neftale except that he was also a prolific and fine carver of saints and wooden images.
