Unsure of the type of wood but cherry, walnut, and plum used to be this sculptor’s preferred media for carving. Condition is “as is” / as depicted in the photographs. Wood feels nice and solid, with no apparent rot. Nicolae Serban is one of the very few remaining Romanian traditional wood crafters – a dying European tradition. Now in his late years, he has been a very prolific sculptor – his work includes miniature artisanal objects to religious artifacts to art sculptures to monumental architectural pieces scattered across the country and Europe – all celebrating Romanian traditions and heritage, with the Romanian peasant / rural life playing. Every one of his pieces were completely hand crafted, with only the traditional tools of the trade – and each, one of a kind. In various interviews over the years, Nicolae Serban has described his art style as “naïve” or “folk primitive”. His family created a FaceBook page for him that can be found by searching for. Troite maramuresene/ Sculptor? Erban Nicolae. We are unsure of his current circumstances, as the last post appears to date back to 2020.
