Puerto Rico Art vintage wood carving Gov. Luis A. Ferre by artesano Jose Negron
Ferre is in very good condition and has never been used. No holes, flaking or warping. Wood and paint are detailed and smooth. Left thumb is slightly damaged, missing tip (See photo). This “talla de madera” was carved in 1983 or 1984 by Puerto Rican artesano Jose Negron; he signed it on the bottom (See photo). He was the island’s third democratically elected governor. After serving as governor, he was elected to the Senate in 1977 and served until 1985. An engineer by training and a businessman, he had two children, newspaper publisher Luis Antonio and author, Rosario. Ferre died in San Juan in 2003. In 1946, he moved to Brooklyn, N. Neftale also became an an artesano/santero (carver of wooden saints) like his father. Negron, the father, is considered a “Santero Espiritual” by the Santos Museum in San Juan and won numerous prizes throughout his life. His works are in collections at the Ponce Art Museum and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP).
