Vintage Tom Taber Woodendare Studio Bald Eagle Wood Carving RARE! I believe this was from his Woodendare collaboration with Hersey Kyle, Jr. The sellers family believed it was won at a Ducks Unlimited raffle back in the day, around 30 or 40 years ago. This would certainly make sense given Mr. Tabers affiliation with DU and the many duck and goose decoys he carved over the years. A simply stunning piece – rustic folk art look from a distance yet beautiful detail up close on this eagle! Very nice paint job as well. Piece is branded on the bottom with Tom Tabers signature. Measures about 21.5 inches tall, 11.5 inches wide and about 18 inches deep. Weighs about 14 lbs. Very nice carving and impressive size. Metal legs and talons (unknown foundry – no visible marks on legs) and heavy carved base to keep it from falling over. Condition is generally very good, with n o known repairs. There are a couple of minor rubs and dings as shown in the many photos (I made no attempt to clean it), but as you can see, it looks great. Wormholed/distressed wood was used, one of Mr. This gives his pieces a primitive look, and in fact some of the wood he used in his carving projects was very old. I thnk this distressed wood also gives it extra character – like the knot hole incorporated in the eagle’s breast… One of a kind! TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THOSE PHOTOS! A stunning and hard-to-find piece which will likely continue to appreciate over time. After all, they aint making any more of em! This is a majestic bird that would look nice anywhere you want to display it, but would be a fitting masterpiece among a collection of Mr. I can easily see it as a mantel centerpiece in a Duck Camp or Deer Lodge. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, good luck and God bless! Some interesting biographical information on Mr. Taber for those who are not already aware. Sourced from Prairiepasttimes. Org. Tom Taber was born and raised in Michigan into a family of sportsmen along the great Michigan flyways. At an early age he was introduced to the sport of duck hunting by his Great Uncle Doc and they always hunted over Docs finely carved decoys. Tom would often help his uncle repair and repaint the decoys over the summer months in anticipation of the Fall season. After hundreds of dedicated hours helping his uncle, Tom became quite adept and very talented at the art of carving and painting decoys. He hand-finished his carvings in semi-transparent stains and paint which allow the natural warmth of the wood to show through. Many of his pieces are carved from well seasoned wood, often decades old, that show worm holes and other natural characteristics that can only be found in very old wood. Using distressed wood is a familiar aspect for some of his most beautiful carvings. No other artist has had such an impact on the world of wildlife carvings. During the 1980s, Tom Taber designed many medallion and special editions for Ducks Unlimited and formed Woodendare with master carvers Hersey Kyle, Jr. These carvings are normally distinguished by special medallions, branded signatures and continue to honor Tom Taber with Ducks Unlimited special issues. After Tom Tabers death, his family and Oregon Wildlife Carvers developed The Taber Collection, which offers wood sculptures replicated in the style of Tom Taber.
