This is a gift I received in 1990 from a relative living in Botswana, Africa. It’s hand-carved from wood and has a smooth ebonized finish with undertones from the reddish-colored wood beneath. It depicts five connected figures and has unique 360-degree views. My understanding is that it’s a traditional Makonde “tree of life” (Ujamaa) sculpture that shows multiple figures intertwined representing family, community, and solidarity. Approximately 4″ long, 3″ wide, 7 tall. The photos illustrate how different light sources can transform this unique piece.
