Vintage Carved Wooden Tiger Cat Sculpture Wood Carving Artist Keats Wasey Lorenz
Vintage Wooden Sculpture by Keats Wasey Lorenz Description and Item Information Up for sale is this beautifully carved big cat sculpture by the American artist, Keats Wasey Lorenz. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This wood carving depicts what looks to be a tiger, but without stripes, it is difficult to tell. It could be a different wild cat. The cat is sensitively and realistically portrayed, with very well executed carving. This piece measures approximately 14 3/8 inches long, 3 3/8 inches wide, and 6 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs about 3 1/4 pounds. This piece would be a fine addition to a collection of wildlife art. Identification This sculpture has markings beneath, as shown, K. The piece is not dated; it is vintage, but the exact age is not known. I found biographical information about Lorenz on the Historic HomeWorks Forum. Per this source, he grew up on Long Island, New York, and he became interested in carving as a teenager. He studied at Eric Pape School School of Art in Boston and at the Boston Normal Art School. By 1910, Lorenz was employed as a stylist and architectural modeler at Cram, Goodhue, and Ferguson of Boston. He also had the experience of working for sculptors George Loesser and Hugh Cairns. He also worked for the interior design and furniture maker firm, Irving and Casson of Boston. During the early 1920s, Lorenz relocated the Midwest. He lived in Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. He is known for architectural carving, including the Senate Chamber doors at the Nebraska State Capitol. He also did woodcarving for other prominent buildings throughout the Midwest, from Dallas to Chicago. Lorenz passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska. Condition This item looks very good overall, with light wear. There are some fine scratches and a few tiny dents/dings. As found and as shown in Photos 5, 7, and 8, one corner of the base has been repaired; there is a very small chip to the corner, as shown. There also is a small area on the cat’s back which may be a patch, likely as made (please see Photo 9). Terms of Sale 1.
