This is a rare vintage Mexican wood carving or alebrije of a nagual or nahual that is attributed to Manuel Jimenez, the famous artist from Arrazola, in Oaxaca, Mexico. The carving is made of wood and has an ixtle or yucca fiber beard. The nagual is a mythical creature in the Mexican culture that is part man and part beast. This one has a man’s face that is painted in more opaque flesh tone colors than the body. The body was painted in a translucent purple aniline paint that has faded in most places. This nagual is larger than most. The legs are attached with nails that have rusted. This piece is not signed which is typical of earlier pieces by Manuel Jimenez. Condition is good for its age. Some of the legs are a bit wobbly. Measures: 13 1/2″ long, by 10″ tall, and 4 wide.
